Limburg is one of the Netherlands’ 12 provinces. Situated between Belgium and Germany, the Region is dominated by borders. Long, tall Limburg has 351 km of borders with other countries and is connected to the rest of the Netherlands by just 113 km. It’s not surprising that Limburgians have traditionally looked further than the borders and have worked, studied or shopped in...

Ironman Maastricht-Limburg

Welcome to Maastricht and to the third IRONMAN Maastricht-Limburg. The unique crossborder Ironman in the world.

In no time, the IRONMAN triathlon has become one of the key sports events in Limburg and the MeuseRhine Euregio.Today, 1,300 athletes will once again swim the waters of the Meuse, bike up and down the splendid hills and roads of the crossborder region Limburg and Belgium, and run through the streets of the oldest city of the Netherlands. Maastricht and the region are proud of their IRONMAN event. We are proud of the profession- al athletes but also of the amateurs, many of whom have been training for more than a year for this gruelling competition.

IRONMAN is not only a sports highlight for our region, but it also sets an example of outstanding cooperation: cooperation between townspeople and their local governments, cooperation with the Province of Limburg, cooperation with the professional IRONMAN organisation, and, above all, cooperation across bound- aries. Some of these boundaries are literal ones, for example the border between the Netherlands and Belgium, and some of them are figurative, because administrative barriers had to be disman- tled to make the event possible. We have joined forces with other municipalities to ensure that you, the athletes, have what you need to practise your sport. Everyone has the same goal in mind: a successful IRONMAN. My warmest compliments to all those involved for organising another outstanding event this year.

The cooperation that has grown up around the IRONMAN event has been extended into other areas as well. For example, the Netherlands and Belgium have cooperated across the border to organise a series of IRONKIDS races in which Dutch and Belgian children can compete in various triathlon and duathlon formats. Other steps are now being taken to cooperate more closely on knowledge transfer, talent development and continuing profes- sional development.

One thing is clear: IRONMAN has all-round benefits, and I could not be happier about that. Maastricht is proud to be hosting IRONMAN again. It has become a fixed date on our city’s calendar of sports events, and we hope it always will be.
